Find serenity this summer by learning the Japanese art form, Sumi-E. This one-day workshop will guide makers of any ability level through an art experience that embraces zen, simplicity and imperfections- perfect for any beginner! Your instructor will teach you three main brushstrokes- each are the building blocks to any Sumi-E painting. You will begin with fun practice activities to learn the brush techniques, followed by painting your first Sumi-E bamboo stalk and leaves!

After building confidence with the process, participants will then create a full-size artwork with guidance for adding landscape or floral features to the artwork. In addition to the black ink, color inks will be offered to add a touch of nature's beauty.

If you're interested in a fun and rejuvenating art experience that will leave you with greater confidence in your painting abilities, all while developing a unique new skillset, Sumi-E is your next art form to try!

Materials:

For the material fee of $10 all required materials will be provided . The brush is yours to keep.

About the Instructor:

Christie Allison is an art educator and artist from Connecticut. Christie’s greatest joy in her work is seeing how art helps people not only connect to their creative side, but to each other and their own inner world. With her strong background in fine art mediums and art education, she is honored to be the 2024 Connecticut Art Education Association Art Teacher of the Year, and to now teach at the Marlborough Elementary School.

In her own practice, Christie seeks a balance between open exploration and skill refinement- she loves to immerse herself in a variety of art forms, such as flower pressing, weaving, and

book making, while also finding that her current focus is on diving deeper into therapeutic artmaking processes- especially painting. Her art has been featured in juried exhibitions, galleries and markets where she has presented works of many kinds, from ceramics, to illustrations and knit pieces. She loves to extend her calm and nourishing approach to artmaking to others by guiding them through experiences that invite makers to feel open, comfortable and fully present in the process.
