The Modern Riffs, a Marlborough-based band specializing in classic rock, jazz, and pop, will perform April 24 at 4th Friday @ the Arts Café, hosted by the Marlborough Arts Center, 231 N. Main St. Marlborough CT 06447
Founded in 2008 by Marlborough saxophonist Bruce Phelps, The Modern Riffs is a musical mentoring group where talented high school and college musicians perform alongside experienced older musicians.
The group was created to give younger musicians the opportunity to build confidence through public performances. The older musicians serve as mentors and are energized by the enthusiasm and talent of the younger players.
Since its inception, the band has featured over 60 young musicians, many of whom have gone on to pursue careers in music, either as performers or educators.
Their performances showcase a dynamic blend of modern jazz and swing, combined with ’70s and ’80s classic rock and funk. This high-energy group features four horns (three saxophones and a trumpet), a female lead vocalist, and a powerhouse rhythm section.
